Rankings are editorial. They reflect our editors' structured judgment, not measured benchmarks, user votes, traffic or revenue. We publish the formula so you can see exactly how each score is built.

The editorial score

Every tool gets a score from 0 to 100 for each category it appears in. Within a category, tools are sorted by that score; ties are broken alphabetically. The score is a weighted sum of six criteria, each rated 1–5:

CriterionWeightHow it's rated
Use-case fit25%Derived. 5 if the category is the tool's primary use case; 3 if it is a secondary use case.
Capability25%Editor judgment. Quality and depth of the tool's output and features for its core job.
Ease of use15%Editor judgment. How quickly a new user gets useful results; setup and learning curve.
Access & value15%Derived from verified pricing data. 5 = verified free tier, free, or open weights; 3 = paid-only, usage-based, or free tier not verified; 2 = sales-only/enterprise pricing.
Maturity10%Editor judgment. Track record, stability and how established the product is.
Transparency10%Editor judgment. Clarity of public pricing, usage limits and data-use policies.

Formula: score = 20 × Σ (weight × rating), rounded to the nearest whole number. A tool rated 5 on every criterion scores 100.

What we don't use

  • No invented metrics such as “users”, “upvotes” or estimated traffic.
  • No third-party review-site ratings.
  • No payment of any kind: sponsorships and affiliate links never change a score or position.

Facts vs. judgment

Facts (official URL, pricing model, free tier, launch date) are verified against the tool's own website or another reliable source, which we link on each tool page. When a fact can't be verified we leave it blank and show “Not verified”. Judgments (the four editor-rated criteria) are our opinion and are labeled as such.

Updates and corrections

AI tools change quickly. Records show a “last fact-checked” date, and scores are reviewed when a tool ships a major change. If you spot an error, email toolpilot@mail.grokbot.com. Tool makers can request a review but cannot buy a score. See also About and our sponsorship rules.
